I adore owls, but few people seem to know of the fish owls, let alone the threatened species of fish owls out there. So, here's a stamp to support the Blakiston's Fish Owl.

The Blakiston's Fish Owl is a fish owl, which is a sub-group of eagle owls. These owls live in riparian areas, and their diet consists largely of aquatic animals, such as fish and frogs (hence the name). However, they will also take small mammals and certain species of birds, and even carrion. They are one of the largest species of owl in existence, possibly up there in size with the Eurasian Eagle Owl. The Japanese population of these birds is around 100-150 birds, though the populations on the Asian mainland are said to be higher.

Blakiston's fish owls are sacred to the Ainu of Hokkaido. They're revered as one of their kamuy (divine beings).
